Open Communities’ mission is to educate, advocate, and organize to promote just and inclusive communities in north suburban Chicago. We seek to eradicate housing discrimination, in all of its forms and against all persons, because of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, disability, familial status, or source of income. Our staff is on the front line, and we believe quality housing is a human right, and that fair housing is the law.
At the time of COVID-19, Open Communities is trying to navigate how to best support and communicate with the older adult population we serve, while working remotely. Older adults, the group most vulnerable to COVID-19 due to their age, have increased risks from underlying conditions and compromised immune systems. More alarmingly, they are most likely isolated in their homes. Our housing counselor and Intake Coordinator are working tirelessly to support our older adult population.
We are working to respond to our clients needs by doing the following: foreclosure prevention and education, eviction prevention and education, hosting a weekly Facebook live with up to date information for tenants and landlords, updating our website and working remotely.
